There has been a lot of discussion about gambling in Japan. Recently a controversial bill about casinos with integrated resorts was passed by the lower chamber of Parliament.
Gambling japan to boost the economy
Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan, came with the idea of casinos with resorts to boost the economy. These resorts will have conference rooms and all kinds of facilities to attract tourists. Abe strived for a bill that regulates the setting up of integrated resorts with casinos for a long time. Not everyone in the Parliament agreed with this idea. The opposition, including the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, wanted to block the bill in the House of Coluncilors. Members of Parliament discussed for hours in the Upper House. They pushed for its enactment by exciting the current Diet session, that usually goes on for 150 days!
Some patience is needed
The Constitutional Democratic Party is against the bill because it legalizes casino gambling. Until now casinos are not allowed to exist in Japan. This makes it very hard for casino operators to establish themselves in the Japanese casino market. The new bill with casinos and integrated resorts is going to change this. However, this will take a couple of years. It has been estimated that the first casinos in Japan open somewhere in the 2020s. So some patience is needed before you can take a gamble in Japan!
Free entry for tourists, not for locals
The casinos of the future will be found in three locations in Japan. Entering a casino will be free for tourists. However, the Japanese people must pay an entrance fee of 6000 Yen, which is about 45 euros. Besides that, locals are not allowed to enter a casino more than three times a week or ten times a month. Together with the pretty high fee this will discourage Japanese people to enter a casino.
