Before the start of the European Football Championships, the Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa) ordered the Staatsloterij (Dutch State Lottery) to stop an advertisement in which professional footballers are featured.
Gambling regulations prohibit gaming providers from using active professional athletes and teams in advertisements for games of chance. These role models are popular with minors and young adults. Sponsoring of professional athletes and teams, for example in the form of shirt advertising, is permitted.
An objective of the gambling policy is to prevent vulnerable groups, including young people, from coming into contact with gambling. Young people are especially vulnerable to developing addictions, including gambling addiction. This can lead to problems at a young age, but also at a later age. For this reason, role models other than professional athletes should not be used if they have a substantial reach among young people or if they themselves are under 25.
