Gaming Authority publishes interesting numbers about games of chance market

Numbers show that the games of chance market is still growing. This has been proven by the Market scan land-based games of chance 2020, published by the Gaming Authority. In 2018, the Gross Gaming Result, which is the bet minus prizes paid, was 2.63 billion euros. This is an increase of 4.7 percent compared to 2017.

Overview of the legal gambling market

Every year the Ksa provides an interesting overview of the legal gambling market. It also looks at recent figures and describes trends and developments. It appears that lotteries are the largest sector in the gaming industry (47 percent), followed by slot machines (41.5 percent), casino games (10 percent). Sports betting is less popular, an accountable for 1.5 percent of the gaming sector.

Most growth from gaming machines

There are more interesting numbers. The BSR achieved with gaming machines grew by 61 million euros. It’s now worth more than 1.1 billion euros. At 53 million euros, most of the growth came from gaming machines that can be found amusement arcades and the hotel and catering industry.

BSR slot machines

The BSR of slot machines in the branches of Holland Casino is more than 8 million euros and remained virtually unchanged, as did the total BSR of the state participation with more than 600 million euros.

Sports betting sector

In the sports betting sector, Toto’s turnover increased by 25 percent in 2018 (+ 40 million euro to over 200 million euro) compared to 2017. The increasing popularity of sports betting was also noted in the previous market scan.

No remarkable developments

Compared to the previous Marktscan, which got published in 2018, there were no major or remarkable developments. For example, the relations between the various sectors did not change much. In the lottery sector, the State Lottery and the Postcode Lottery are still by far the largest parties in the Netherlands. They make up for 34 and 37 percent respectively of the total lottery market.

How much do the Europeans spend on gambling?

On a yearly basis, the average European gambler spends about 210 euros more on games of chance than the average Dutch gambler, who spends 198 euros. The Dutchman does spend more on lotteries than the average European gambler though: 86 euros against 71 euros. On the other hand, The average European is willing to spend 39 euros per year more on sports betting than the average Dutchman, who only spends 13 euros.

Online gambling in the Netherlands becomes legal

The Market Scans that the Ksa has published so far are always about the so-called land-based (so physica) games of chance. At the moment online gambling is prohibited in the Netherlands. There’s good news for gambling companies and gamblers though: online gambling will be legal if the Remote Games of Chance Act is implemented. If the legalization has happened, Ksa will also include data about the online gambling market in new Market Scans.
