More illegal Poker tournaments discovered during Covid-19 pandemic

At the moment, The Gaming Authority (Ksa) is working together with the police to detect illegal poker tournaments. Recently illegal poker tournaments in Hoofddorp, Hoorn, Capelle aan den IJssel, Zaandam, Tilburg and Rotterdam have been discovered. In a number of cases the Ksa supported the actions.

Illegal poker tournaments

At the illegal poker tournaments fines were handed out to the participants. They violated the measures being taken against the Corona virus. The locations were closed down. On a few occasions, the Ksa opted to prosecute the person who had given the opportunity to gamble illegally.

What is Poker?

Poker, is a popular casino game, just like Roulette and Blackjack. According to the Dutch Gaming Law, Dutch Gaming Act, there may be one provider of casino games in the Netherlands. That is Holland Casino. Only under certain conditions player Poker for money outside Holland Casino is permitted. For example, it’s allowed in a ‘domestic’ environment, like a home, and not on a commercial basis.

What does the Ksa do?

The Ksa, is as a supervisory body has the expertise to recognize illegal gambling. It can provide support in various forms. For example, Ksa can advise municipalities and/or the police before inspections take place. It gives instructions on how to secure evidence, for example.

On the road

Sometimes Ksa inspectors go out on the road or provide remote support by telephone. If the police or other investigative parties want to, the Ksa can write an expert report that can be used for the investigation

Why are more illegal poker tournaments detected?

Marc Merx is the current head of Ksa Enforcement. He gives two explanations for the fact that many illegal poker tournaments are organized and detected. Enforcement enforcers focus on people’s meetings. A logical consequence is that they are discovering illegal poker tournaments, Merx tells. A second explanation is that more illegal poker tournaments are being organized because Holland Casino has closed its doors. Holland Casino the only company in the Netherlands where gamblers can win money with Poker.

Big risk: No supervision

Illegal poker tournaments cannot be supervised, which is a big risk. The logical consequence is that there’s no guarantee of fairness, let alone be adequate attention to addiction prevention and age verification. Besides that, there’s also a big risk that the Corona virus will spread among the Poker players.
