Many major international players are not yet among the 40 parties that will be applying for a license these days. Companies such as Unibet, Pokerstars and Bwin are not yet allowed to operate in the Netherlands. The law states that companies that have focused on the Dutch market in recent years, when online gambling was not yet permitted, must wait before applying for a license.
They are not allowed to apply for a license until later and, as a result, will likely not be active on the Dutch market until 2022. “They have been put at a disadvantage, are on the penalty bench for a while,” says René Jansen of the Kansspelautoriteit. “The parties that are allowed to start working on October 1 therefore have a head start. They will be able to take steps sooner and can start recruiting players then.”
Dutch people who already gamble online will soon have to re-register with the sites they play on. They must re-identify themselves and specify what limits they want to set on their gambling behavior.
