Number of gambling places in the Netherlands decreases

Data published by CBS, the Dutch institute for Statistics, has shown that over the past decade the number of casinos, slot machines and lottery operators has decreased by about ten percent. So there are fewer gambling houses in the Netherlands than ever before. However, Brabant is different, since the number of gambling palaces in this province has increased.

Gambling companies in Brabant

Currently there are about 650 Dutch gambling places left. It’s quite interesting that the number of gambling companies in Brabant has increased more than six percent in the past decade. Just take a look at the numbers: whereas Brabant counted 80 gambling places in 2010, it now has 85 establishments where people can test their luck. This is an increase of 6,25 percent, which is quite a lot. Interesting to note is that the number of gambling places in the provinces of Limburg and Drenthe has increased as well, from 55 to 60 and 15 to 20 respectively.

Gambling companies per person
The data from CBS shows some interesting information. For example, it became clear that the province of Limburg has the most gambling companies per person. For every hundred thousand adults, the province in the South of the Netherlands has 6.4 gambling companies. This is a little bit more than ten years ago, when there were six. In Brabant, the number of gambling palaces per inhabitant remained stable: per hundred thousand inhabitants, gamblers can spend their money in 4.1 places. Utrecht and Overijssel are the two provinces with the least gambling companies: for every hundred thousand adult inhabitants, gamblers can spend their money in these provinces in 3.3 gambling palaces.

Where to find the most gambling establishments?
In almost all Dutch provinces there are less gambling houses now than in 2010. Gambling enthusiasts still love to visit the province of South Holland though, since about 25 percent of the gambling companies are located here. Gamblers can choose between 160 establishments in total. This is a lot more than the number of gambling establishments in the provinces of Zeeland and Flevoland, both only fifteen. A decade ago you could choose between 25 places, so the number has decreased with 40 percent.

Popularity of gambling increases

The data from CBS shows that gambling companies are disappearing in most regions in the Netherlanders. However, according to the statistics office, the popularity of gambling is increasing. This makes sense if you realize that the gambling sector has grown faster than the economy as a whole in recent years. Businesses are left with more money under the line – the so-called gaming revenue – and are creating more and more jobs. This is also beneficial to government’s treasury: the gambling tax paid by casinos and lottery prize winners was more than seven times higher in 2018 than in 1995.
