The Dutch government has decided that the privatization of Holland Casino will not take place for the time being. The bill has been withdrawn because there’s not enough support for the proposal in the Senate, Minister Dekker from Legal Protection announced. However, a new law that made online gambling legal did make it to the Senate last February.
Better to wait a little longer after legal online gambling
The fact that online gambling is now possible in the Netherlands is already a big step. It changes the Dutch gambling market severely in a short period of time. Because of the big change, many Dutch senators like to wait a little longer before the privatization of Holland Casino. Another reason to wait is the fact that the role of the State is considered to be very important when it comes to the fight against gambling addiction. This became clear during the discussions about the privatization law in the Senate. It’s also unclear how the survival of the still state-owned Holland Casino is guaranteed. This government has to make this clear before privatization really becomes possible.
Privatization on hold
At first, Sander Dekker promised to come up with a new proposal. However, the Minister but has now decided to put the privatization on hold for the time being. This means that Holland Casino will no longer make the transition to the free market during this cabinet period. Trade unions FNV and De Unie are pleased with Dekker’s decision. They feared that the privatization would have a negative impact on the working conditions of Holland Casino employees. Huug Brinkers, director of De Unie, says it’s ‘good news’ that Holland Casino will remain in state hands because the addiction and anti-money laundering policies of the government will stay in place for now.
History between Holland Casino and the government
The history between Holland Casino and the government goes way back. In 1976 the government started Holland Casinos to push illegal gambling houses out of the market. However, the government ow wants to get rid of casinos because offering gambling games is no longer a task for political The Hague. Besides that, Europe put pressure on the Netherlands to get rid of the casinos. Money is absolutely no reason for the government to keep the casinos. The dividend of the 14 Holland Casinos is estimated at 10 million euros a year.
Response of Holland Casino
Holland Casino hasn’t given a response to the news yet. At the moment the company operates fourteen casinos. More than a million visitors visit one of these places every year. Holland Casino annually makes a huge profit of 59 million euros.
