The Postcode Lottery has made a special donation of € 4 million to the Red Cross. The money is intended to support the relief efforts in the second corona wave. Both organizations announced this at the end of September 2020. This extra donation allows emergency aid to reach its destination faster. Part of the money is also used by the Red Cross to better prepare for the ways in which the emergency relief organization can deploy.
Aid in the Netherlands and the Caribbean
The gift of 4 million euros will be used to provide support to care in the Netherlands where possible, to offer food aid and to provide psychosocial help to people who become isolated. Very practical help is also offered, for example by transporting corona patients to healthcare facilities or to test streets. A lot of help is also provided in the Caribbean. Corona causes a great shortage of food there. The Red Cross tries to provide some relief in this area with food packages, hygiene support and practical support by providing shelter and education.
Support in dire situations
In the first months of 2020, it became clear how quickly things can go wrong if the corona virus spreads. In no time, the hospitals were overloaded and much of the regular care could not be provided. The Red Cross can help in these special situations to ease the worst of the distress a bit. It is therefore not surprising that the Postcode Lottery has decided to make the freely disposable contribution, which the organization is allowed to make each year, available to the Red Cross.
