Spanish Minister of Consumption wants to ban online gambling advertisements

The Spanish Minister of Consumption Alberto Garzón (Unidas-Podemos) wants to ban online gambling advertisements during daytime in Spain. If it’s up to Garzón, the Spanish coalition government will ban online gambling advertisements during daytime. This means that advertisements would only be shown on television between 1 and 5 in the morning.

Negotiations gambling Spain

Minister Alberto Garzón will soon meet with important people in the gambling sector. Not to negotiate but to announce the measures to be taken. The measure, and thus the ban on advertising online gambling, will be taken by royal decree. However, a date and a final text are not yet known.

Gambling in Spain: the most normal thing in the world
Online gambling is banned in several European countries, such as the Netherlands. However, in Spain it seems to be the most normal thing in the world. Before, during and after football matches it is quite normal to see dozens of advertisements pass by for online gambling. What’s more: you can even find the names of major gambling websites on the uniforms of football players.

Ban on advertisements for online gambling

In the near future, the Minister of Consumption wants to ban advertising for online gambling for 20 out of 24 hours a day, just like the Italian gambling law. This will have a direct impact on television channels and radio stations, especially those where sports broadcasts can be seen or heard.

Lucrative business
Online gambling is a lucrative business in Spain. In 2018, the gambling sector invested at least 168 million euros in online gambling advertisements. According to the ministry, online gambling and betting is becoming an increasing problem in Spain. According to the ministry online gambling is a public health problem, because it affects a lot of young people. Measures that apply to tobacco and alcohol, also banned on television and radio, also must be taken for gambling.

Ban on gambling houses near schools

If it’s up to Minister Alberto Garzón more measures will be taken. For example, people are thinking about banning gambling rooms in towns and cities. If there are still any, they will not be allowed to open until after 10 p.m. There could also be a ban on gambling houses near schools in the near future.
