Stichting Droomwens is a well-known organization that raises money to make the wishes of sick children come true. However, the treasurer of Stichting Droomwens, also the chairman and secretary of the foundation, is suspected of embezzlement. The charge is that Koos van G has embezzled almost one million euros. During a hearing in the court of the city of Zwolle, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has demanded a prison sentence of three years.
What is Stichting Droomwens?
The money that donors make available to Stichting Droomwens is meant to fulfil the wishes of sick and vulnerable people by giving them a special day out, for example in an amusement park or some other fun-loving place. Many collectors have made an effort to raise the money, to make sure that as many children as possible have a great day.
How much money has been embezzled?
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, it has been proven that van G. has embezzled at least 875,000 euros in the past three years. Part of the money of the foundation has been used for the purpose it was intended. In the same period of three years, the foundation spent about 10.000 euros on children’s trips to the Efteling. Van G. states that he is not aware of any wrong-doing. At the same time the former treasurer acknowledges that his actions look bad.
How has the money been spent?
Unfortunately, not all the money has been spent in a good way. For example, Van G. paid for the costs of business seats at Excelsior football club. It has been estimated he spend more than 30,000 euros for this. It has also been proven that Van G. frequently used the foundation’s bank card to pay for his casino expenses. This also included money for his visits to online casino websites. In none of the casinos does it seem that Van G. really made a lot of profits, let alone that the foundation benefited in any way.
Money for gambling
Van G. admits that he was sloppy with the money. He is a proven casino lover with many unproven stories about his successes in Roulette. Besides that, at Holland Casino he is known for drinking a lot while playing. In April 2017 Holland Casino even decided to deny him access for a month because of his alcohol abuse.
Sponsor of his son’s company
There’s more. It also has been proven that G. used the foundation several times to sponsor his son’s company. This company received 1300 euros a month for services rendered to the collectors who had to scrape together the money for the foundation. For another son, the foundation bore the rent for a business premises he used.
Verdict in two weeks
It’s clear that the possession of the large sums of money together with his casino and football hobbies has not been the best combination for van G. Soon the verdict of the court will follow. It will then become clear to what extent the court will deem Van G.’s reasoning plausible.
