The American research bureau SuperData Research recently conducted a research about social gaming and gambling at the request of the Gambling Authority. The researchers discovered that about fifty percent of Dutch people between the age of thirteen and twenty-four eventually makes the switch from social gambling to games of chance that cost money.
What was the focus group?
The focus groyp of the SuperData Research were young Dutch people. About 4.1 million of them have been playing social casino games at least one time. The players are a cross-section of the population, although higher educated young men are in the majority.
When did the research take place?
The research took place from October 2016 to January 2017. The main goal was to map the entire digital gaming market. The researchers focused on social casino games, which are very close to online games of chance. It seems that the social gaming market has stagnated in the last couple of years. However, it still makes a revenue of 27 million euros a year. Besides that, the social gaming market is twice as big as it was in 2012. It can’t beat the online gambling market though, which is about ten times bigger. Interestingly enough, there are less players.
Connection between social casino games and games of chance
There seems to be a connection between social casino games and games of chance that people have to pay for. This is the same case for suppliers of both games. It has become clear that about half of the Dutch young people in the age group 13-24 first plays social games, before switching to games of chance. What’s more, players find it ifficult to make a difference between social games and games of chance. There is a fine line between them. However, the biggest difference is that players can win or lose a lot of money with online games of chance. Especially young people like to take the risk. You can either become rich, totally broke or something in between. The disadvantage of this risk-loving attitude is that it could lead to problematic gambling behavior, such as being addicted. It does not say that problems occur with every young player who likes to take a risk in an online casino.
Strict monitoring of the gambling market
The thing is that social gaming is not part of the Dutch Gambling Law. At the moment the Dutch Senate is busy with studying a bill that eventually must provide the right guidance to the protection of players. The Dutch Gambling Authority monitors the gambling market strictly, and in that sense the research conducted by SuperData Research fits perfectly. The Gambling Authority is looking into the findings of the research and what effect it will have on the authorization of future and current gambling providers. The Gambling Authority works in close cooperation with other European supervisors.
