The El Gordo Lottery
Vilalba is a relatively small municipality in the region of Galicia where about 15000 people live. Most of them are a big fan of the ‘El Gordo’ lottery. The first draw ever was held in 1812, which makes it the oldest lottery of Spain. Some traditions have been existing for many years, including the school children who choose the winning numbers out of the prize pool.
Ticket for El Gordo
Every year thousands of tickets for El Gordo are sold. A complete ticket costs 200 euros, which is a lot of money for the average citizen. This is why the participants usually purchase parts of the ticket for a lower prize. All these tickets have the same five numbers. Sometimes people also take part in the lottery together, which also happened in bar Cascudo in Vilalba. Guests of the bar won 220 million euros together. Time for a cheer!
The most exciting moment of the year
For many people in Spain, the El Gordo draw is one of the most exciting moments if the year. Not only because of the Jackpot that contains millions, but because of the other prizes as well. In this lottery you can win big and small prizes. Because of the huge number of prizes it usually takes a few hours before the draw is completed.
Be careful with your money
Obviously the residents of Vilalba are incredibly excited. Their small municipality has now been put on the map. Even the priest has reacted. He says that the winners need to spend their money carefully.
