Growth of gambling accounts in the Netherlands stagnates

The legal market for online gambling has grown again over the past six months. Gross gaming revenue (BSR; stakes minus winnings paid out) increased, but not as much as in previous measurement periods. The number of player accounts actually playing the game remained virtually the same. This means that market growth appears to be leveling off after two years.

This is according to the online gaming monitoring report published in October by the Dutch Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit, Ksa). The total BSR for the period August 2022 to July 2023 is €1.3 billion. This means that the market is growing again, but not as much as before. From August 2022 to January 2023, the BSR increased by 35%. From January 2023 to August 2023, it was 8%.

In July 2023, the Dutch had a total of 826,000 active accounts. Six months ago, in January, the number was 859,000. Because players can use multiple accounts, the number of accounts does not directly represent the number of players. In its latest report, the Ksa estimates that 676,000 Dutch people gambled online in the past six months; that is 4.7% of the adult population. On average, 417,000 Dutch people gamble monthly.
