The provincial court in Overijssel has ordered two international gambling companies to compensate two Dutch gamblers for their losses. Gambling companies lost a lot of money during the period when they illegally offered games and bets over the internet. The ruling sets a precedent for hundreds of other cases yet to be heard by Dutch courts.
Bwin and Pokerstarts no license
In a lawsuit against bookmaker Bwin, which currently has no licence in the Netherlands, the player claimed the return of €187,600 plus statutory interest. The gambler lost the amount while playing at Bwin between January 2018 and November 2019. The lawsuit against PokerStars involved amounts of $230,700 and €400, plus legal interest, and the company withdrew its licence application in 2023. The plaintiff lost this amount between 2006 and 2021 on poker, online casino games and sports betting sites.
